You hear the phrase “the latest trend” so often, but how do you define a trend? It’s the natural inclination of a person or group of people towards something specific and concrete. Trends can be a general development or change in a situation or in the way people are behaving. They can also be new developments or patterns over a period of time. We generally use the word “trend” when a collective behaviour that lasts a short time happens.

Trends vary every year and today they are widely used to highlight what is fashionable or a novelty since it is a majority choice about a product or service. A trend ends up being the choice of many other users. They usually leave their mark over a period of time and some even readjust without losing their reason for being.

Due to the pandemic situation since 2020, a need has arisen to make our homes a place of complete well-being using sustainable materials, interior design like neutral colours, new or updated furniture to match the changing needs of our spaces or, an added personal touch to the rooms where we spend the vast majority of our time. Here we’ll take you through the interior design trends for 2021 to help your home be the best it can.

Naturelle par excellence

The pandemic has left some of us confused, frustrated and turned upside down so we should avoid the ostentatious and elements that charge the atmosphere of our homes with too bold or negative energy. This year we should look for the perfect balance combining neutral tones with hints of colour to give our home the personality it deserves.

Handcrafted or natural materials are a great way to let your space take centre stage whilst injecting character. Reclaimed wood is the latest trend that’s unique, showing plenty of texture whilst adding that feeling of warmth and sustainability.

Think simplicity and order using beautiful natural tones and materials… the french call it “Naturelle par excellence”. 

A “Like” for sustainable design

In our previous post, we talked about energy efficiency since at Rointe we are concerned about our planet. For example, the use of sustainable materials in our homes makes us feel closer to nature, whilst helping our planet. We also recommend letting in as much natural light as possible and adding vitality to your rooms with plants, flowers and foliage. It helps your space, and you, breathe cleanly.

Have you considered a living plant wall in your home to add interest and colour? This would work well in bathrooms or kitchens with the perfect conditions to help keep it looking fresh. They can be easily fitted onto any solid area, built indoors or out and can be as large or small as you like. Living walls improve air quality and create that WOW factor we all crave now and again.

For us, unsustainable plastic has no place in a home so get rid of plastic straws and containers and invest a small amount in pretty glass jars for your food items like cereal, biscuits and rice. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a new variety of artisan pasta in your jars and proudly display them in your kitchen to add personality and character. It may seem like a small change, but it’s one that looks and is good for your home and the environment.

To add more sustainability to your home, try natural or recycled textiles like organic cotton, recycled polyester and low-impact linen.

Colours trends

This year explore more neutral tones such as nudes, greys or pastel shades, which will make your home look more welcoming and intimate.

That on-trend personality will be given by dark blue, grey and mustard tones, and the mixture of both will give you elegance, joy and well-being. Did you know the Pantone colour of the year is Illuminating (a zingy yellow) combined with Ultimate Gray (a pale grey)? It’s unusual for them to name 2 colours that complement one another, but it “highlights how different elements come together to express a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting, conveying the idea that it’s not about one colour or one person, it’s about more than one,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Industrial style trends

The industrial style of mixing metal, brick and wood is a rising trend as we spend more time at home. It’s fuss-free and can be achieved in a number of ways, from exposed brick walls or pillars to adding metal lamps, picture frames and wooden tables. It’s a mix of modern and traditional and works for interiors that serve as spaces to live, work and play.

Mixing and matching different pieces and styles of furniture adds character, where previous trends of matching sets will go out of style. Consider selecting non-matching pieces with contrasting materials and colours to mix things up. Think reclaimed wood tabletop with copper or metal legs.

Specific spaces

As we adjust the way we live, we’re also adjusting the spaces we live in. Comfort over concept is now paramount, trying to make your home a sanctuary on every level for every part of your life.

Working from home may have created havoc in your house, with areas normally used for rest and relaxation overtaken with office life. It’s important to disconnect from work, which is why corners of a room or a window sill can become comfortable spaces with lounging cushions to allow you to relax, read and be away from electronic devices such as televisions, computers or mobile phones. Keep it light, bright and comfortable to really clear your mind. Try to keep a room specifically free from home working so you have an oasis to escape to when you need a break.

We now need to address the purpose of each space in our homes, with a renewed emphasis on rooms that look good but also live up to increased use. Durability comes to the forefront, choosing pieces that last over fast, throwaway trends of the past. There will be an investment in quality over quantity as our homes adapt to new ways of living.

Lighting has always been a “one size fits all” approach in our homes, with not much consideration for the kind of lighting that suits different rooms and purposes.
