Forests cover about 31% of our planet. They help people and animals survive by purifying water and air, providing people with work and animals habitats and food (80% of the world’s terrestrial species reside in forests). Forests also play an important role in mitigating climate change, absorbing carbon dioxide that would otherwise remain in the air and contribute to ongoing climate change patterns and crisis.
That is why it is so important to protect and recover them.
Deforestation and its effects
Deforestation is a serious environmental problem that affects all countries. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), an estimated 7.3 million hectares (18 million acres) of forest are lost each year, which is equivalent to 27 football fields. It is considered “the removal of a forest or a mass of trees from a piece of land and then converting it to a non-forest use”.
Deforestation can have many causes: clearing land for buildings, fuel, pasture for cattle, and plantations. This has led to biodiversity loss, habitat damage, aridity and soil erosion.
Reforestation and vegetation recovery campaigns are important tools to fight against the effects of deforestation, which concern us all. Increasing vegetation cover helps absorb greater amounts of greenhouse gases, one of the main culprits of climate change.
Rointe Campaign: Help our forests grow
We want to contribute to a healthier climate and reclaim our forests for a more sustainable future. That’s why, as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, for every Rointe heating product registered online, we will contribute to raising funds to plant trees in the country where we were born, Spain.
This year we have teamed up with C02 Revolution , experts in forest optimisation and reforestation, to launch another tree planting campaign, including a variety of important species such as cedar, pine, hawthorn, willow or birch. The more products that are registered, the more trees can be planted. This campaign aims to recover a natural environment, located in Pontevedra (Galicia), which was devastated by fires in 2006, 2016 and 2017, by planting smart seeds using drones and traditional planting methods.
